Alex Hughes is a professional guitarist, singer, music educator and musical director currently based out of Melbourne, Australia. His diverse range of skills make him an in-demand musician in many capacities from solo acoustic instrumentalist, to sideman, to band leader.
Born and raised in Sydney Australia, Alex first entered the professional music scene at age 16 when he joined legendary Sydney act, “Dirty Deeds AC/DC Tribute,” as Angus Young. At the same time he was also earning a music degree at the Australian Institute of Music.
In 2008 he moved to Los Angeles, California in order to attend the world renowned, “GIT,” program at Musicians Institute. He was awarded the, “Carvin Scholarship,” based on his submission tape to the school and would also go on to receive the, “Stanley Clarke Scholarship.” While at MI he studied with such musicians as Carl Verheyen, Dean Brown, Scott Henderson, Alex Machacek, Adam Levy and Oz Noy.
After graduating from MI Alex spent the next six years working as a full-time session guitarist and musician for hire on the Los Angeles scene. He played hundreds of shows as a soloist in various forms, and also played with many original and cover acts as a sideman. He worked with such artists as, Omar Rodriguez Lopez of Mars Volta, The Five and Dime Band at Disney California Adventure, The Universal All Access Band, The CopyCats, Douglas Charles Showalter, Joel Van Dijk, Dwight Kennedy Music, Porter Lori, UltraLove, Meg Olson, Lissa Lauria, and many others. He also ran a very popular live music night in Hollywood for five years and hosted musicians such as, “Wax,” “The Good Mad,” and, “Lana Shea.”
During this period he released two solo EPs under his own name. The EPs feature a unique mix of percussive acoustic guitar playing in the vein of Jon Comm and Andy Mckee, with more traditional singer-songwriter elements. He also released a duo EP with fellow singer-songwriter Adam Havick under the moniker, “Hughes and Havick,” which featured backing vocals from Grammy nominee, “Cam.” You can purchase these EPs using this link.
In 2016 Alex moved to Melbourne, Australia where he is currently a regular in the local music scene, making almost constant appearances at some of Melbourne’s most popular venues. In addition to solo acoustic shows, Alex also plays regularly with artists such as, “Maya,” and, “Jourdain.” He is in the guitar department at, “Forte School of Music,” and also offers tuition from his home studio and over skype.
